Here are some tips on how to make your habits simple & convenient so you’ll always do them!
Do Less Than You Want To Do
The first thing is to do LESS than you want to do.
Whenever we start a new habit, we have a tendency to start way too big!
We usually get excited and motivated to start a new habit, but as we all know that motivation lessen’s overtime so we go from running 5 miles on the first day to running 0 the next week. But what Chanelle suggests is to do LESS than you want to do when you’re first starting out.
So for example, let’s say you want to get into a better habit of running.
Instead of planning to go run 3 miles…she suggests just putting on your running shoes and going around the block. Start out with something so little that it’s just as easy to do it as not doing it.
The beautiful thing about this trick of doing less than you want to (in the beginning) is that it sets you up for success!
This way we are way more likely to keep up the habit and don’t forget that these little actions over time make all the difference!
2. Make Your Habits Convenient
Make sure that you are making your habits as convenient as possible! Whether you working on a habit of eating better, drinking water, working out, waking up early, scripture study or even just flossing…it’s so important to make your new habit as convenient as possible for you!
The simplest things like putting your floss on the bathroom counter, or having your yoga mat and clothes already laid out can make the world of difference when you’re wanting to start a simple habit.
Remember that you’re wanting to create these new simple habits to help you so why not make it as easy as possible!
3. Decide What Would Make The Most Difference
Sometimes there are habits that we think we SHOULD do. But instead ask yourself what simple little habit would make the most difference for you right now? What do you need the most?
Think about your biggest pain points right now.
What is that is bothering you the most? Then go from there and start breaking that down until you get to a very simple habit that will really make the most difference in your life.
Ex. Dinner time is crazy
Maybe you need to create a system
Meal Planning would make a big difference
Start with just making a simple list of 10 meals that your family loves that you can always reference.
We absolutely LOVE how Chanelle uses transitions throughout her day so that she can be 100% present with whatever it is she’s working on.
Instead of working up to the last minute until her kids get home from school, Chanelle will make sure she ends work at home early so she has time to transition from work mode to mom mode. She does this by getting to a good stopping point, turning off her laptop, listening to a recording of her life vision (which is similar to a purpose statement) and then she just waits for them to come home. This way she can give them her full attention as soon as they step into the door instead of rushing to finish a few things as they’re walking in.
These simple transitions can make such a difference in how you show up in your different roles.
Think of the different transitions you have throughout the day and decide how you want to use those in between times to refresh and relax. Having some space in between your different responsibilities can really help you become much more present throughout your day.
