Using Curiosity to Create Possibility
Using Curiosity to Create Possibility
Curiosity is one of the most powerful mindset tools! It can help you find opportunities and possibilities all around you. It can help you open your mind, loosen your expectations, alleviate frustration, and approach the world ready for inspiration all the time.
Curiosity is one of those things that seems so simple and yet it has so much power to alter the way we experience our world.
We want to talk a bit about curiosity as a worldview today and how we can specifically and intentionally choose curiosity in different areas of life.
Curiosity can help you experience:
Less judgment
More of an open mind
Less frustration
More possibility
5 areas curiosity can open up possibilities in your life
Today we’re going over 5 different areas of life where you could use curiosity to help open up possibilities in your life:
Creative work
Relationships
Parenting
God & spirituality
Yourself
We’ll go over each one in detail. Feel free to see if there’s an area you’d like to focus on right now and then be sure to go through the journal prompts for that area so you can start seeing more possibility along the way!
Curiosity in Your Creative Work
Curiosity can be the solution when we feel afraid to start a new creative project. Using curiosity in your creative work can help you with:
Perfectionism
Doing something others haven’t done before
Or taking a new approach to something others already do
If results have gone badly in your creative work (launch didn’t go as planned, art piece didn’t work, publisher rejected your manuscript etc) it can be helpful to be curious about your results. Instead of feeling like a failure, use curiosity to uncover why something didn’t work out as planned and you might uncover more possibility the next time you try.
You could ask yourself phrases like:
I wonder why that didn’t work?
I wonder why no one wanted to buy that?
How fascinating! I wasn’t expecting that result.
If you’d like to dive a little deeper, try using these journal prompts for more guidance.
Journal Prompts:
What would it look like to approach this work in a unique way I haven’t seen before?
How could I do this differently next time to get a different result?
2. Curiosity in relationships
Do you have a relationship in your life right now (marriage, family, friendship, co-worker) where you could practice a little more love & understanding? Curiosity can help you in arguments & conflict, when you’re trying to make new friends or just want to be a better listener in general.
You could use a phrase like:
“Tell me more about what that’s like…”
If you’re in an argument or dealing with conflict you could use curiosity to:
Understand what someone else wants
Look for clarity rather than making your point (this will make you both happier!)
If you’d like to dive a little deeper, try using these journal prompts for more guidance.
Journal Prompts:
What else might be going on here?
How could I be there for her more consistently?
Why did that upset him/her so much?
3. Curiosity in parenting
Curiosity can be such a great tool when it comes to parenting! Instead of feeling stuck, frustrated or overwhelmed; curiosity can help you find new solutions, inspire creativity and experience more peace.
Whatever problem you’re currently facing in parenting, see if there’s a way you could use curiosity to help you find a new perspective or different solution.
Instead of thinking that you just can’t possibly do something:
““How can I possibly find time for homeschooling?”
You could ask yourself a less limiting question like:
“How could I homeschool my kids in a way that still gives me time to myself?”
If you’d like to dive a little deeper, try using these journal prompts for more guidance.
Journal Prompts:
I wonder why he acts out in that way.
What does she need more of from me?
How could I be contributing to this situation?
4. Curiosity about God and spirituality
There are so many questions we can’t or don’t know the answers to, but questioning from a place of open curiosity can help give you peace & guidance rather than just being frustrated you don’t know or understand something.
If you’d like to dive a little deeper, try using these journal prompts for more guidance.
Journal Prompts:
Why would God not answer this prayer?
How must He see me in this situation?
What is the bigger picture here?
5. Curiosity about yourself
Whether you have a loud inner critic that keeps you from doing what you love or you are just feeling a little stuck…curiosity can really help you get past your limiting beliefs and help you see yourself in a new way!
You could use curiosity to help you see:
What are you truly capable of
Who could you be
What is possible for you
If you’d like to dive a little deeper, try using these journal prompts for more guidance.
Journal Prompts:
In what ways do I hold myself back because of what I believe is okay for me?
What kind of person could I see myself becoming?
What big things might be possible for me?
I hope this conversation is useful in thinking about the ways we can open our minds and have more room for understanding, love, and bigger, more spacious thinking.
As I move forward, I’m trying to make more efforts to be curious in every area and less prone to quick judgments. I’ve seen huge benefits already in my relationships, along with the ability to slow down my responses, visualize other options, and be open minded in every way.
