News vs a short walk outside
Music vs a podcast
Checking phone vs closing eyes and 5 deep breaths
Mentally taxing vs mentally stimulating. You’ll know the difference because one has a cost, the other has a reward.
Notice your energy
It’s really important to notice what time of day you have the most mental energy and use that time for thinking tasks like:
Creative work
Making decisions and plans
Also notice what time of day you have the most physical energy and use that for active tasks like:
Exercising
Cleaning
Playing with kids
Plan your decisions in advance (this could be weekly or at a certain time of day). You’ll have less decision fatigue when you’re not constantly making decisions every second of the day. Plus this can give yourself and your family a sense of calmness because they know what to expect.
Meals
Kid activities
What you’re doing in your magic hours
Find a few minutes alone to reset your day (in the afternoon)
Alone time
Nap

Anything that signals a reset for you, a fresh start if you need it

One simple way to signal to yourself that you’ve got it together
Find some kind of consistent habit of putting your environment in order in the morning and evening. For us that looks like: making the bed in the morning and having a clean kitchen at night before we go to bed.
Whether that looks like writing out your to-do list for the next day, doing a little meal prep, straightening the family room before bed…it doesn’t need to be complicated or take a lot of time. Just give yourself a signal that the day is starting under control or you worked hard today and now can rest. It can make a world of difference to help you feel calm and under control.
