3 steps to take when things don’t go as planned
Did something not go how YOU thought it would? Whether it’s something big, little or in between it can be frustrating, disappointing, heartbreaking, overwhelming or just annoying when that happens.
That’s why we wanted to share three steps to help you process it, learn from it and move on.
1. Feel the Feeling
What are you feeling after something didn’t go as planned?
Disappointment
Frustration
Sadness
Worried
Lost, out of control, overwhelmed
Something else
If it’s something little in your daily life, it might be a moment of frustration or disappointment and then leaves as quickly as it came. It can still be helpful to recognize it and feel the feeling so those little blips of frustration or disappointment don’t accumulate to something bigger by the end of the day.
When it’s something life changing or something that was really important to you or that you invested a lot of time and energy planning that didn’t go as planned, of course you’ll need a longer time to process the feeling.
*Be sure to acknowledge it so it’s not a secret. Journal, talk it out, pray, time in nature, exercise, let off steam, etc. Do whatever it is that helps you process your emotions in a healthy way.
2. Use a Mantra
The second thing to do is to work on your mindset to help give you some closure. An easy way is to create a mantra that speaks to you. What NEW thoughts are you going to have now that things didn’t go as you planned?
This is something you CAN control, which can help bring peace, excitement or whatever new feelings you’re after.
Here are some examples:
Everything is as it should be.
This is exactly how it’s supposed to go.
This was actually the plan.
I am loved.
It’s okay, let’s try again.
Having a mantra on hand for when little things don’t go as planned during the day can be so helpful!
3. Take Action
Once you’ve processed the feelings and have changed your mindset, you’re now ready to move forward. You get to decide what it is you’re going to do now or how you’re going to react. What ACTION are you going to take to move forward from this?
This is something you CAN control!
What are you going to do now?
Try again
Try something different
Do something else
Seeing the gifts and blessings of something not going as planned
What can you learn or understand from this?
It can be a great opportunity for you to increase your capacity to learn and grow
Gives you an opportunity to increase your patience, faith, hope and flexibility
Understanding that this might just be a stepping stone to something greater
Helps unlock the next door or gets you to the next step
Believing that God has a greater plan for you
