Ep. 80 Intentional Learning
In today’s episode, we’re talking about how to approach our learning and education with more intention. We are in constant information overload, so it’s easy to spend so much time consuming knowledge that we feel overwhelmed and frustrated -- or we don’t take the time to apply what we’re learning.
We’re talking about how to approach our learning and research with careful intention so we can use our time well, discern the right information for us, and move forward with confidence.
We talked about:
Why it matters so much to decide ahead of time how you want to learn and what kind of resource would be ideal
The power of diving deep into one resource or with one mentor
How to find the right education for YOU
5 tips to avoid feeling overwhelmed when consuming information to solve a problem
Recap of Episode
Our Favorite Tips For Learning Intentionally
We wanted to share what we’ve learned from being more intentional about our learning and how it’s made a difference in our progress and the actual action we take in our business and life! Hope these help you as well!
Instead of just taking a few tips or ideas from lots of experts, immerse yourself in the work and ideas of ONE or two people whose work you really resonate with. Take their whole approach and philosophy and start identifying with that. When you immerse yourself in one person’s work, you can learn to think the way they think.
Know ahead of time what you’d like to learn or know about and what speaks to you!
If there was one magical resource that could help you with the problem or thing you want to learn, what form would that take?
Be intentional in the first place of what kind of resources you’re looking for.
Do a little more work on the front end
Trust that you’ll find exactly what you need
If you know what you want, it’s way easier to find it.
Dive deep into the resources that really serve you well rather than continuously searching for the next thing or more information.
5 Tips to Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed
Here are 5 tips to avoid feeling overwhelmed when you’re consuming information to help fix your problem.
Knowing ahead of time what it is you’d like, what works for you and what speaks to you.
It’s okay to be picky. If a resource or particular voice is not speaking to you, don’t feel guilty about moving on before finishing.
Pick one or two resources at a time
Get recommendations from those who have a similar personality or values to you that had a positive experience with a particular resource.
Be willing to invest in someone who you really trust and resonate with. Buy their books, take their courses, attend their events, work with them one on one or strike up a friendship. You can learn how to translate their philosophy into your life.
Consuming vs. Creating
There have been times I feel guilty about how much I’m consuming and learning and feel like I’m supposed to be creating more instead. But learning can be a really good thing when it’s intentional.
Take the things you’re learning and consuming and let it result in a mindset shift. Let it seep into who you are and change how you think about things.
I used to desperately try to pick up tricks and tips, practical and actionable stuff. But that’s the kind of information I have to limit or I get stressed out. It’s important information to have so you can step away and create it. But then moving forward, I’m working on my mindset to think certain ways so that my own brain can be the thing that’s powering my future creation.
If you can get your own brain thinking in a new way then there’s no limit to what you can create. You can create new things that have never existed before and share new ideas that nobody else is talking about rather than consuming what others are teaching you and reiterating that.
After a couple years learning from a mentor, I can think like they do and then create my own way of thinking and being and creating that combines the things I’ve learned with my own insight and ideas to create something new.
One thing that might help you is to have stages to consume and then create and process what you’ve learned.
