Do You Need a 10 Minute Reset?
Today we’re teaching you about my (Laura’s!) strategy for doing a 10 minute reset.
It’s basically time in the middle of the day when I’m feeling exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, distracted or uninspired, where I’ll do a 10 minute reset to refocus, realign, and give myself a little attention, rest, and connection.
Just like little kids need our full attention for a few minutes each day in order to feel connected and listen well, we need to offer that to ourselves as well! We’re talking about how we can give ourselves the proper one on one time we long for. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes. By giving yourself a 10-minute reset you’re giving yourself connection and attention. You’ll be able to see a huge difference in your performance throughout the rest of the day!
What a 10-minute reset is not
I’m not talking about watching a quick TV show, or eating a treat. Although there’s nothing necessarily wrong with those things!
What a 10-minute reset is
I’m talking about giving our minds and bodies sincere time and attention. A few minutes where you REALLY connect with your mind and body.
This is a time just for YOU! It’s a time to contemplate, be alone, and go inward. It’s a time to give every part of yourself attention and love! This is very different than distracting ourselves with some outward source.
I’ve noticed that going inward even for just a few minutes helps me feel really centered.
If you think about it like an athlete, it’s like having a strong core. For an athlete, a strong core can really strengthen your performance. It doesn’t matter if you lift weights, do yoga, rock climb, water ski, play soccer, run, or dance. Each athlete benefits so much from having a strong core. It allows them to have so much more possibility, strength, and endurance.
So think of your 10-minute reset it as something that helps strengthen your core.
You could also think of it like an axis in a tire. You can be the still axis within a revolving wheel. Just like spokes coming out of a bike tire, you have different relationships, obligations, and activities. But when you can give time and attention to yourself it increases the level of performance.
How to take a 10-minute reset
Let’s get specific of how I’ve been doing this each day and how you can do it to fit your life.
So during the middle of the day when I’m feeling stuck, exhausted, distracted etc. I’ve been taking a quick 10 minute break.
For me I usually connect this with when I work out. So I’ll go on a quick run or do a yoga class at home and then I lay down on my yoga mat and set a timer for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes I put on headphones with soothing music, sometimes I listen to a guided meditation and other times I don’t have anything. Sometimes I grab a soft blanket to lie over me and other times I put my mat close to the window where the sun is coming in.
I give myself 10 minutes of undivided attention.
I take them time to just be still and really connect with my body & mind. The most important part is: There are no expectations! This is not a time where I have to tell myself, “Oh I have to meditate” or “I really need to….” I just use that 10 minutes to let my body and mind be alone and to just BE.
We want to be productive. We want results. We want to feel like we’re accomplishing things. And a lot of times that makes beautiful things turn into something we “have to do.” It’s been freeing to take 10 minutes to just be, without setting any expectations for myself.
And you know what’s been happening for me? If I set my timer for 15 minutes, I’ll usually just lay there for 10 and then I gently fall asleep for five minutes. Sometimes my body naturally wakes up after five minutes or my timer does that job for me.
And guess what?! I wake up feeling like I slept 10 hours even though it’s only been five minutes! I feel like I just spent the afternoon at the beach or got a massage. It feels amazing! I don’t feel groggy, I feel energized!
It’s as if someone pushed a reset button on me and I’m ready to go for the rest of my day.
After that I don’t feel guilty about taking 10-15 minutes because it makes such a big difference. It really affects my performance throughout the rest of the day. I’m much more patient with others & myself. I’m less distracted & more energized!
Now I do have to say I just started this a few weeks ago and there are some days where I tell myself I don’t have time. Or sometimes the thought of being completely alone or still can be scary or feel like I’m wasting time or being lazy. But on the days where I just try to work through without giving myself that sincere time and connection I notice that I’m not doing my best work.
It’s not just about having “quiet time,” it’s about giving your mind and body what you really need: sincere time & attention.
I recently read this quote from Anne Morrow Lindbergh who wrote a very sweet & thoughtful book called “Gift from the Sea.” She said, “When one is a stranger to oneself, then one is estranged from others too. If one is out of touch with oneself, then one cannot touch others. Only when one is connected to one’s own core is one connected to others.”
What would your 10 minute reset look like?
This is time alone that could involve contemplation, prayer, music, centering through an intention or mantra. It might even look like reading, journaling, creating art or doing something else that feels very therapeutic to you, swimming, taking a walk in nature, or just sitting on your porch feeling the sun on your face.
Obviously it’s going to look different for everyone, but this 10 minute reset is all about being attentive with yourself, going inward, and gaining your inner strength.
I want to challenge you to pick a time of day where you can carve out 10 minutes. Look at your day and notice what part of the day do you feel exhausted? What part of the day do you feel the most overwhelmed or distracted. Maybe that changes day to day, but pick a time for today or tomorrow ahead of time & see what happens. Make it something that you looked forward to & a priority. Treat it like a meeting with someone important that you cannot miss! Because you are important!
I know that if you give your body and mind a little more attention and love, you’ll see a difference in your performance throughout the day. And once you feel more connected to yourself, then you can be more fully connected to others.
