Ep. 99 Surrendering to Outcomes
In this episode, we’re talking about the idea of surrendering to outcomes. Often in our goal setting, relationships, expectations, or plans of any kind, we have a particular idea of how it “should” go and what we want the outcome to be. And when things don’t go the way we hoped or planned, we can experience some really negative emotions that might be unnecessary.
We talked about:
The ways our experience can change dramatically when we loosen our grip on a certain outcome
The difference between surrendering and apathy
The mental shift between wanting vs. needing something
Trusting that God always provides in some way
How to remain lighthearted about results

How to Surrender to Outcomes
I’ve been experimenting with the idea that I can have the same desire to plan and hope and create WHILE ALSO relinquishing my need for the outcomes to be exactly what I want.
Understand what you can control: the work, the mindset, the feelings etc.
Consciously let go of what’s outside your control: the exact outcome, results
What Surrendering to outcomes leaves space for:
spontaneity
unexpected surprises (big magic)
others’ ideas & strengths (creative collaboration)
room for God to work
it just feels different - light, simple, easygoing
New mindset tools to help you surrender to outcomes
Here are some thoughts Kristin has used to help her let go of certain outcomes she had planned for:
If I don’t have it, I don’t need it.
This is all about wanting but not needing. It’s important to you, but not essential.
This way I’m committing to my goal intensely AND relinquishing my grip on it. I’m trusting I will reach my goal while also leaving space for God to do His own work in the process.
Trust that God provides.
I also commit to remain lighthearted and content with what I’ve been given and what I receive — no matter what.
It’s all about having a mindset of “it’s all okay.” Sometimes it’s just as simple as a mental reminder I repeat to myself: "This is what I’m expecting… but it might not happen that way and that’s okay.”
What we’ve learned from applying this principle:
“The things I really want don’t happen until I’ve completely surrendered. Once I’ve officially surrendered then that’s when the magic happens, when my prayers are answered, or this wonderful opportunity comes up. Not until when I learn to surrender and trust myself and God.” - Laura
The difference between surrendering and apathy is: apathy is when you’re not participating in the creation of what you want
“Because I want and don’t need, I can remain lighthearted about however it turns out.
It’s about wanting something just because I want it, not because I need it so desperately. (I know I’ll be okay and provided for either way). THEN I can be lighthearted about it and it can be fun.” - Kristin
